EDM 8102 Management Information Systems in Education

This course provides the student with an overview of today's management information systems (MIS). The premise is that business initiatives should drive technology choices. Every discussion first addresses the business needs and then addresses the technology that supports those needs. This course is designed to give students the ability to understand how information technology can be a point of strength in educational management. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the complementary managerial views of information as an operational, managerial, and strategic resource.

Course objectives
The objectives of this course are to enable students to:

• Demonstrate the role of information systems in organisations
• Discuss different types of information systems applicable to educational organisations
• Apply sound managerial concepts and principles in the development and operation of educational managementinformation systems 
• Effectively apply systems analysis, information system design and project management concepts for effective and efficient development and deployment of information systems in education
• Manage information systems security in educational organisations
• Discuss and logically resolve ethical and social issues of information systems use
• Use computer software such as MS Access or MS Excel for basic database management

Learning outcomes
This course will produce educational managers who are able to:

• Effectively and efficiently manage or support the management of information systems and information technology resources in their organizations.Apply sound system development and implementation principles in the developmentand deployment of information systems in their organisationsEnsure that there is a supportive, secure and ethically / socially acceptable operational environment for information systems use.Use personal productivity software tools to complete assignments and other tasks.
