Course Unit Description

Projects refer to tasks or planned programs of work. Tasks or programs require a large amount of time, effort, and planning to complete. With the pronounced resource constraints, no waste can be permitted. Proper planning and careful analysis of projects is the focus of this course.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Identify areas of potentially viable ventures, including a description of the need (market for business projects)
  • Outline the project planning process
  • Assess the feasibility of a project
  • Contribute to negotiations on project financing
  • Understand project leadership basics and contribute to efficient management of projects
  • Monitor progress of project implementation
  • Use various computer applications in project planning and management

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course unit, students are able to:

  • understand and practice the process of project management and its application in delivering
  • successful IT projects;
  • evaluate a project to develop the scope of work
  •  provide accurate cost estimates and to plan the various activities
  • understand and use risk management analysis techniques that identify the factors that put a project at risk and to quantify the likely effect of risk on project timescales
  • identify the resources required for a project and to produce a work plan and resource schedule
  • monitor the progress of a project and to assess the risk of slippage, revising targets or counteract drift
  • distinguish between the different types of projects and follow the stages needed to negotiate an appropriate contract
