Course Unit Description
Aims
- To introduce students to the definitions, concepts, structures and application of Physical Education and Sports in primary Schools system in Uganda.
- To acquaint students with the knowledge about the current status, problems and challenges in the context of global change in physical education and sports.
- To enable students acquire knowledge on historical, philosophical and contemporary perspective of Physical Education and Sports.
- To introduce students to concepts and principles which govern growth, maturation and development and how they are applied to exercise and sport among children.
- To help the students understand basic movement skills and how to develop them in children.
Course Objectives
By the end of this unit, students should be able to:
- Identify and describe Physical Education and Sports
- Identify the goals, aims and objectives of teaching physical education at primary school level.
- Develop strategies to address the problems and challenges of physical education at primary level.
- Trace the historical origins of Physical Education
- Explain the contributions of the forefathers, other nations, the missionaries, and the colonial administrative and post independent government.
- Explain the local and international implications and global challenges in the development of Physical Education and Sports in Uganda and their own locality.
- Outline the concepts and principles of growth and development in relation to primary school pupils
- Apply the knowledge about growth and development in teaching physical education.
- By the end of this unit, students should be able to identify the basic movement skills that need to be developed in children.
