Course Unit Description

The course covers heat (energy) changes during chemical reactions. The determination of heat of combustion of ethanol is practically described. The rates of reactions are described with emphasis on factors affecting reaction rates.

Course Objectives
By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Define exothermic and endothermic reactions
  • Distinguish between exothermic and endothermic changes
  • Draw and interpret energy level diagrams
  • Explain rate of reaction
  • Identify the factors affecting rates of reactions
  • Carry out experiments involving measurement of rates of reaction.
