Course Unit Description
This course involves the study of successful management of agricultural resources to satisfy changing human needs while maintaining and enhancing the natural resource base and allowing long-term economic growth in addition to avoiding environmental degradation. Focuses on the application of agro-ecological intensification (AEI) principles with bias on agro-forestry and other climate-smart agricultural practices.
Course Objectives
- To explain agroforestry practices that can be used to improve land use and earn income.
- To explain the concepts of sustainable Agriculture, climate-smart agriculture, and Agro-ecological intensification (AEI)
- To explain the causes of unsustainable Agricultural practices
- To describe how to produce organic food products
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students should be able to:
- Understand the concepts of sustainable Agriculture climate-smart agriculture and Agro-ecological intensification (AEI)
- Understand the causes of unsustainable Agricultural practices
- Identify and apply different sustainable agriculture, climate-smart agriculture, and Agro-ecological intensification (AEI) practices
- Construct and use appropriate technologies for sustainable agriculture
- To start and manage organic and climate-smart farms
- Explain the concept of agroforestry as a sustainable land use system.
- Raise and manage tree nurseries for establishment for various agroforestry systems
- Identify and explain factors that influence the adoption of agroforestry in Uganda
- Manage a tree enterprize profitably
