DCP2104 Agro-Forestry and Sustainable Agriculture

This course involves the study of successful management of agricultural resources to satisfy changing human needs while maintaining and enhancing the natural resource base and allowing long-term economic growth in addition to avoiding environmental degradation. Focuses on the application of agro-ecological intensification (AEI) principles with bias on agro-forestry and other climate-smart agricultural practices.

Course Objectives 

• To explain agroforestry practices that can be used to improve land use and earn income.
• To explain the concepts of sustainable Agriculture, climate-smart agriculture, and Agro-ecological intensification (AEI)
• To explain the causes of unsustainable Agricultural practices
• To describe how to produce organic food products

Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students should be able to: 

• Understand the concepts of sustainable Agriculture climate-smart agriculture and Agro-ecological intensification (AEI)
• Understand the causes of unsustainable Agricultural practices
• Identify and apply different sustainable agriculture, climate-smart agriculture, and Agro-ecological intensification (AEI) practices
• Construct and use appropriate technologies for sustainable agriculture
• To start and manage organic and climate-smart farms
• Explain the concept of agroforestry as a sustainable land use system.
• Raise and manage  tree nurseries for establishment for various agroforestry systems
• Identify and explain factors that influence the adoption of agroforestry in Uganda
• Manage a tree enterprize profitably
