Course Unit Description

The course introduces students to disease investigation, identification of livestock diseases and control measures. The module also introduces important public health aspects such as animal waste management, animal disease act, ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection of animals and slaughtered meat.

Course Objectives
The student should be able to:

  • Investigate, identify livestock diseases and institute appropriate measures.
  • Carry out ante mortem and post mortem inspection on animals and meat and give proper judgment.
  • Handle animal waste disposal and management.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student should be able to: 

  • Perform a clinical examination, diagnose disease, explain the epidemiology of the disease and advise on the disease control strategies
  • Recommend ethically acceptable slaughter procedures
  • Inspect meat from various species of animals
  • Explain the different grades of meat and dispose of condemned meat and abattoir wastes.
  • Dispose and manage animal waste.
