CUR 2206 Teaching and Learning Computer Studies
Course Unit Description
This course aims at enhancing the ability of student teachers to effectively teach computer studies to secondary school students. It includes understanding how computers have influenced teaching and learning and how to prepare to teach computer studies using modern and effective techniques. The course also includes identification, analysis and incorporation of contemporary issues into the computer studies school syllabus and to find ways of popularizing the use of computers for teaching and learning in secondary schools.
Course objectives
This course unit is meant to enable learners to:
- Describe how computers have influenced teaching and learning
- Distinguish between learning about and learning with computers
- Differentiate between the national teaching syllabus, school teaching syllabus, and a UNEB syllabus
- Prepare detailed schemes of work on any topic in computer studies
- Prepare a lesson plan with effective teaching methods and aids for any topic / unit in computer studies
- Explain circumstances which influence a teacher’s choice of instructional methods
- Explain different motivational techniques in teaching computer studies
- Acquire skills to effectively use computer-based teaching and learning
- Explain the obstacles to the teaching of computer studies in Uganda and how these can be/ are being overcome
- Explain how various contemporary issues like gender, HIV/AIDS can be incorporated in the computer studies curriculum
Expected learning outcomes
- Graduate teachers who can use appropriate methodology to effectively teach computer science in secondary schools
- Increased use of computers in the teaching of computer studies
- Increased use of creativity and innovation in using available resources to teach computer studies
- Graduate teachers who appreciate the potential and limitations of using computers for teaching and learning in Uganda
