Course Unit Description
This course unit is designed to introduce to the students the idea of Databases, Database theory and Database Management Systems. In this course unit, the students will cover how to design and manage a database using SQL.
Course Objectives
This course unit is meant to:
- Introduce the students to database management principles
- Develop further the skills needed to design and manage a database
- Provide and build the theoretical foundations of databases in the business/ organizational environment.
- Identify various data structures, models and to examine critically the current implementations of databases management systems.
Expected Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this course unit, the students should be able:
- Design and build a relational database for a small business application from given user requirements.
- Use suitable query languages to query a relational database.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical underpinning of the relational model.
- Discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of other database paradigms.
