Course Unit Description

The course deals with the chemistry of benzene and its derivatives, reactivity, synthesis and factors affecting reactivity.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Classify given compounds as aromatic or not aromatic
  • Name derivatives of benzene
  • Describe electrophilic and nucleophilic reactions of benzene and other aromatic compounds
  • Describe the synthesis and outline properties of aromatic ketones and aldehydes
  • Outline reactions of aromatic diazonium salts
  • To synthesize some polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons

Learning outcomes

  • Students will adequately gain knowledge of organic chemistry
  • Improved subject content command and skills for teaching organic chemistry
