Course Unit Description

Introduction to computers, computer software, mouse, keyboard, operating systems, commands, short cuts, folders, creating files, word processing, MS Excel, etc. The course covers aspects of computers, operating systems, hard and software, folders, creating files, short cuts, and word processing

Course objectives

  • To enable the student to be able to distinguish between hardware and software
  • Identify the parts of a computer system, describe program, data disks and the operating system 
  • To enable students, acquire elementary skills in word processing (creating, formatting, printing and saving documents)
  • To enable students to acquire elementary skills required for a spread sheet containing information that can be formatted, sorted, analyzed and charted
  • To learn the common procedures available to execute an electronic spread sheet

Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students should be able to:

  • Define a computer, describe the information processing and identify the basic computer system
  • Define software, types of software and describe the purpose and capabilities of operating systems
  • Identify the operations and shapes of the mouse and key board.
  • Describe the nature and characteristics of word processing as well as the functions of word processing soft ware
  • Practice operations of word processing
  • Describe the nature, characteristics and functions of spread sheet software
  • Practice spread sheet software
