Course Unit Description

The course introduces students to oral literature. It explores it’s functions in society and why it is studied. The course explores the question of classifying and describing various forms of oral literature – with special reference to the literature from Ugandan cultural groups. The course also explores the question of how oral literature can be integrated into the Ugandan education system.

Course Objectives

  • To expose students to the concept of Oral Literature
  • To acquaint students with the stages of the development of Orature
  • Examine the forms of oral literature 
  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills to create own oral literature pieces for purposes of teaching creativity
  • Equip students with the knowledge of carrying out research on the folklore

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to: 

  • Identify and illustrate various forms of oral literature
  • Justify a method of classifying oral literature
  • Explain and illustrate characteristics and features of various oral forms
  • Identify various oral forms from Ugandan cultures
  • Evaluate the role of oral literature in the education of the young
  • Carry out research on folklore
