Course Unit Description

This course is an introductory systems design course for software engineers and business systems analysts. The course presents an overview of information systems and the systems development lifecycle for the software engineer. Topics include: Information Systems theory, including strategic role of Information Systems; Systems Development Life Cycle; Project Management; Data Flow Diagrams; Program Specifications.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Explain information systems theory
  • Identify the different phases Systems Development Life Cycle
  • Identify the different activities under project management
  • Draw Data Flow Diagrams
  • Carry out Program Specifications

Expected Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course unit, the students will:

  • Understand the importance of an organized approach to the development of information systems
  • Understand the Life Cycle approach to systems development
  • Understand the conventional (traditional) methodology which is based on the Life Cycle approach
  • Understand alternative approaches to information systems development
  • Understand the analysis and specification activities conducted during system development
  • Know how to select appropriate implementation strategies for an information system
  • Understand how contemporary tools, techniques and standards are employed in system development
