Course Unit Description

Wildlife is under threat from an ever increasing human population and climate change and will thus require specialized expertise to manage and conserve in perpetuity. The course is designed to examine the different wildlife management techniques and conservation approaches being applied in Uganda and globally.  The course in detail will cover aspects ecological census techniques, biogeography of flora and fauna, adaptation to different habitat types, environmental monitoring aspects, wildlife and human wellbeing and the institutional and policy framework for managing wildlife both locally and internationally. 

Course objectives

  • To provide students in Biology a specialization in the field of Biodiversity, Conservation and Wildlife Management 
  • To generate qualified students who can directly get jobs in the allied fields of Biodiversity, Conservation and Wildlife Management
  • To generate qualified graduates who can be part professional organizations working in the field of conservation and environment protection. 
  • To generate a team of graduates who can take up jobs related to the environment in educational institutions
  • To generate a skilled graduates who can undertake research in the field of Biodiversity, Wildlife biology and Nature conservation
  • To provide an alternate avenue to Biology graduates to specialize as “environmental entrepreneurs” in areas such as Environmental audits, Environmental education, Ecotourism etc. 
  • To create awareness about Biodiversity and Nature Conservation

  • Students able to manage wildlife in all its forms
  • To fill a critical gap in wildlife managers with critical skills
  • Appreciation of benefits derived from wildlife to sustain human wellbeing
  • Wildlife and biodiversity conservation enhanced in the face of emerging threats such as oil and gas exploration and climate change effects
