BIO2202 ANGIOSPERM TAXONOMY
Course Unit Description
Describing vegetative and reproduction structures mainly of shoots of plant specimens, taken from different families, using internationally accepted botanical terminology; constructing dichotomous keys to enable the specimens to be identified; using available floras to identity the specimens. Learn herbarium procedures by collecting, preserving and documenting specimens to be deposited in a herbarium.
Course objectives
- To impart on students practical aspects collecting, identifying, classifying and preservation and documentation of plants to a level accepted internationally.
Expected outcomes
At the end of the course graduates should:
- Be able to recognize similarities and differences between plants at a glance.
- Be able to describe and identify unknown plant specimens brought to them.
- Feel confident to participate in exercise of environmental impact assessment where vegetation is to be cleared to use the land for other purposes.
