Course Unit Description

The course is a core cross-cutting course for all students enrolled in Bachelor of Education Primary programme. The course is aimed to equip students with a critical understanding of the Sustainable Development (SD) and Education for Sustainable (ESD) principles, debate and practices focusing on social, environmental, and economic forces underlying sustainable development. The course describes challenges, conflicts and explores potential approaches to address their causes. The course adopts global and local comparative perspective, exploring the specific conditions for intervention in different contexts from all over the world. It equips the learners with the knowledge and skills to initiate and promote sustainability practices, and prepares the learners to become educators of sustainable development. 

Course objectives
This course unit is meant to:

  • Introduce students to the issues, principles and concepts and practices of sustainable development.
  • Provide students with skills for educating for sustainable development
  • Provide a forum for students to engage with community in issues that affect humanity and sustainable development
  • Develop students’ skills and competence in community engagement practices
  • Produce teachers who are reflexive, critical and sensitive to sustainability practices.

  • Teachers who have the knowledge and skills for sustainable development.
  • Teachers who can educate for sustainable development
  • Teachers who can influence their learners and the community to adopt sustainable development practices    
  • Teachers who can initiate Sustainable practices in their schools
