Course Unit Description

Education system in any country cannot be isolated from the education system of other countries. Keeping in view the requirement of equivalence in global world, it is important to compare the education system of Uganda with other developing and developed countries. Knowledge about education system of various countries assist policy maker to reflect on the education in the context of competition and excellence. It is, therefore, important that the teachers are aware of the objective, curricula, teacher education, admission criteria and staff recruitment requirement of the education system of developed and developing countries. 
Therefore, this course introduces students to education systems of selected countries. It deals with analysis of aims, value and utility, methodology, factors affecting education systems, issues and problems in Education in the different Education systems. 

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • Explain key concepts of comparative education
  • Justify the teaching of comparative education to teacher trainees
  • Relate education to National development
  • Analyzed the issues and challenges facing education systems in an era of change
  • Compare and contrast Educational systems in a bid to make improvement.

Expected learning outcomes
After studying this course, the teachers should be able to: 

  • Describe the meaning and significance of comparative education 
  • Compare their own education systems with those of other countries 
  • Compare the education systems of selected developed countries  
  • Compare the education systems of selected developing countries 
  • Analyze critically the education system of any one East Asian state
