BCT2105 Operating Systems
Course Unit Title
BCT2105 Operating Systems
Course Unit Description
An operating system (OS) defines an abstraction of hardware and manages resource sharing among the computer’s users. The OS shares the computational resources such as memory, processors, networks, etc. while preventing individual programs from interfering with one another. This course introduces the services and workings of operating systems. It covers how an operating system controls all the processes of a computer system including those of peripheral devices.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
- Describe the role of an operating system in the management of system resources
- Acquire an in-depth understanding of the processes and principals involved within the operations of the computer
- Explain how the performance of the computer system can be measured.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Appreciate the role of an operating system in the management of system resources
- Assess the performance of a computer system
- Utilize the principles that govern system operations to improve system performance.
