Course Unit Description
This is an introductory management course that focuses on the fundamentals of organizations and management practice. It explores the functions of management (Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling) as well as, the aspects of the organizational environment. The principles learned in this course will enable the student to understand and appreciate the role of managers and management in organizations; as well as the foundations of organizational systems, structures and change process.
Objectives of the Course
The course is designed to:
- Provide to students an insight into the orientation of organizations, management theory and practice.
- Motivate critical thinking and interlink organizational theory, management practice and organization performance.
- Equip students with a framework of analysis, to enable them appreciate organizational dilemmas and use analytical tools to handle contemporary management problems with better prospects.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Describe the foundations of organization, the organization as a system, the interactions among human resources, technologies, and organization design.
- Evaluate and discuss the nature, theory and complexities of organizations.
- Identify the different elements of organization structure, design, process, and context.
- Describe the elements of planning, organizing, leading and control as management functions.
- Apply organization theory to prescribe management options for organizations today, specifically the problems of managing diversity, teams and change.
