Course Unit Description

This course covers the sources of farm power, the internal combustion engines, their maintenance as well as the tractor and draft animals’ implements. Emphasis on primary and secondary tillage, planting, chemical application, and harvesting equipment. The selection and operation of both machinery and tractors will be practiced and precautions on safety will be stressed throughout.

Course objective

  • To expose students on the various sources and uses of farm power
  • To train students on the use and care for various Farm Machinery
  • To equip students with knowledge on tractor types and engine systems
  • To train students on how to make operator level repairs to tractors and equipment 

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Explain the different sources of farm power stating their advantage and disadvantages
  • Learn the principles of operation of farm equipment 
  • Explain the operations of the tractors and tractor systems
  • Maintain tractor implements, adjusting the implements and attaching implements on a tractor
  • Describe the different types tillage implements
  • Train draft animals and use animal for traction
  • Select the proper equipment for a job and evaluate its performance
  • Select and acquire proper parts for equipment maintenance and repair
  • Appreciate the importance of safety rules and equipment
  • Understand the economics of mechanized agriculture
