Course Unit Description

The course unit is designed as a general introduction to the broad aspects of computer systems, introduction to computer operations and computer applications. The learners will cover the modern computer and its effect on Society.  Types of computers, Input Output and storage devices. Introduction to Disk operating System (DOS), Introduction to windows operating system.   Introduction to and use of Application Packages. Computing packages Word processing packages- Microsoft Office 2003 ,2007, Spread sheet packages including SPSS.  Introduction to Data analysis using SPSS, Entering Data in SPSS, Coding Data Saving Data, creating Variables in SPSS, Variable labels. Analysis of data and interpreting the output in SPSS. The Internet. What it is. Internet Browsers and Search Engines, Websites and Internet Addresses. Searching for information on the Internet.   

 

Course Objectives
This course unit is meant to

  • Give students a broad understanding of computers and their uses,
  • Introduce the students to Information and Communication technologies,
  • To introduce the students to application software in general,
  • To differentiate between sets of application software.
  • To make use of the different computer application software to solve day-to-day problems.

Expected Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this course unit, the students should be able to

  • Use the computer to perform various tasks,
  • Use the Internet
