EDM7202 Legal and Ethical Aspects of Educational Leadership

This course is centered on the legal and ethical aspects that educational leaders and managers in particular, and educationists in general need to know to effectively and efficiently perform their functions. The course firstly gives an overview of law, ethics and policy and how they relate. It then focuses on aspects of educational law such as the characteristics of Educational Law, the sources of Educational law, the classification of educational law, the Purposes/importance of educational law, and the legal framework in which the educational sector in Uganda operates. Then attention is turned to the ethical issues that surround the function of educational leadership and management such as ethical leadership in education, the sources and importance of ethics in education, ethical dilemmas for educational managers, and ethical approaches and their implications to educational leadership and management are discussed.

This course aims at exposing students to the understanding of:

• The relationship between law, ethics, and policy
• The characteristics of Educational Law
• The sources and classification of Educational law
• Purposes/importance of educational law
• The legal framework in which the education sector in Uganda operates (focus is on some national educational laws and their implications for educational management in Uganda)
• The concept of ethical leadership
• The Sources and importance of ethics in education
• Ethical approaches and implications for education
• Ethical dilemmas that confronts educationists
• Values of ethical conduct and the costs of unethical conducts in education administration proce
