Course Unit Description

This course utilizes economic principles to study the public sector and its impact on resource allocation and income distribution. The emphasis is put on market failure and the role of the government in correcting these market failures and Government revenue sources and expenditures.  

Course Objectives
By the end of the course unit, students should be able to:

  • Explain microeconomic theories to public decision making.
  • Explain public goods, externalities, and government interventions using microeconomic theories.
  • Identify Uganda’s tax policy from practical and theoretical economic perspectives
  • Demonstrate knowledge of government intervention in the economy and their shortcomings.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course unit, students are able to:

  • Apply microeconomic theories to public decision making
  • Explain public goods, externalities, and government interventions using microeconomic theories
  • Critically assess Uganda. tax policy from practical and theoretical economic perspectives
  • Effectively communicate the rationales for government intervention in the economy and their shortcomings.
