Course Unit Description
This course explores various aspects of enterprise network management with an emphasis on managing faults and optimizing performance to ensure high service availability. Key concepts and technologies explored include basic management functions; standards-based management technologies, and the business impact of network management. In the laboratory, students use standards-based platforms to perform on-line monitoring and management of network equipment.
Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:
- List and explain various aspects of network management
- Define network management roles
- List and explain OSI and Internet network management standard
- List and explain strategies and technologies for preventing, detecting, isolating, and repairing network faults
- List fault tolerant devices and describe why they are classified as fault tolerant
- Describe a security plan that considers physical security and protection from unauthorized access
- Describe documentation strategies for local area networks and enterprise networks
- List and define standards for network management as given in lecture and assigned readings
- List and define strategies and technologies for managing and controlling system faults
- Discuss issues relevant to the management of network devices as presented in lecture and assigned readings
- List and discuss methods of measuring, monitoring, and solving network performance issues
- Select, implement, and manage network management platforms
