BCT1102 Introduction to Computing
Course Unit Description
This course, using both lecture and laboratory practice, introduces students to basic computer concepts in hardware, software, networking, computer security, programming, database, ecommerce, decision support systems and current developments in artificial and business intelligence. Hands-on lab includes desktop management, computer hardware assembly, software installation, spread sheets, databases, presentation, HTML5, CSS, Cybersecurity and robotics.
Course Objectives
This course aims at equipping learners with knowledge and skills to:
- Lay a firm foundation for the forthcoming computer-related courses in the computer engineering programme
- Develop digital literacy skills that will enable them to operate as distinguished professionals in an increasingly digital society
- Identify and use various computer tools and applications for improved day to day life activities
- Operate a variety of hardware independently and trouble shoot associated common problems
- Practice safe, legal, and ethical means of using computers
Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Describe a user-level view of computers, and their role in the society.
- Use computers to enhance productivity their day to day activities
- Create static websites, and interact with the web through Internet
- Analyze and present details on computer hardware specifications for reasonable purchase decisions, along with working knowledge of hardware components, for example an understanding of how to add a video or a sound card to a computer.
