Course Unit Description

Map reading, interpretation, analysis, value of maps and map making. Measurements on maps and map setting. Analysis of relief and slope. Construction of relief section and sketch maps. Discipline and quantitative analysis of drainage. Analysis of rocks, vegetations, climate, land use, settlement, transport net work and their relationship. Application of central place theory and nearest neighbour analysis on maps. Terrestrial and aerial photo interpretation. Recognition and description of landforms, drainage features, vegetation and human activities on photography. Field work, its importance and preparation. Practical field work experience and follow up. Simple techniques of measurements of distance, height and slope angles, areas, river flows, sediment size, meteorological variables, pedestrian and vehicle counts, census, sampling and recording techniques, structure of field work report and report writing. (A field work should be conducted on/around campus). 

Course Objectives

  • To enable learners identify Geographical features using grid references
  • To interpret maps and photos for location and development purposes
  • To draw and interpret map sketches, graphs and photos
  • To equip learners with skills of drawing and measurement in Geography 

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • To produce learners that are capable of Observation, Interpretation, Identification and and work as a team.
