Course Unit Description


This course explores the concept and origin of feeding fish, technology of feed formulation and the challenges of fish feeding in the economic aspects. Examples are drawn from mostly aquaculture settings with limited orientation to wild fishery. 

Learning objectives
By the end of the course, Students will be able to;

  • Learn about the different classes of dietary requirements of farmed tilapia
  • Describe the different fish feeding regimes
  • Learn about how to formulate fish feeds and conduct fish feed analysis
  • Learn about the signs and symptoms of malnutrition in fish 

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe different classes of dietary requirements of farmed tilapia namely: lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.
  • Describe the fish feeding regimes (feeding levels and frequency) and diet form, feed types and feeding methods
  • Formulate fish feeds and perform a proximate fish feed analysis
  • Diagnose farmed fish suffering from nutritional disorders and recommend remediation strategies.
