DCP2101 Introduction to Plant Botany and Physiology
Course Unit Title
DCP2101 Introduction to Plant Botany and Physiology
Course Unit Description
This course introduces the student to the Principles of Plant Botany and Physiology. It includes the fundamentals of botany, classification of plants (taxonomy), plant morphology and anatomy, and the physiological processes that take place in plants.
Course objectives
- To introduce students to plant botany and physiology
- To introduce the students to plant taxonomy
- To understand the morphology, and anatomy of dicots and monocots
- To understand the basic physiological processes in plants (reproduction, transportation, photosynthesis, respiration, seed formation, dispersal, germination and dormancy, guttation, and transpiration)
- To describe the different plant hormones and growth regulators
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe and explain the concepts of botany and plant physiology
- Classify plants based on principles of plant taxonomy
- Identify and describe plants based on their morphology and anatomy
- Describe and explain common physiological processes in plants
- Explain the roles of different plant hormones and regulators
