Course Unit Description

This course will provide a comprehensive study of insect population ecology principles of pest management; pesticides and challenges of IPM and insect pathology are important. Arthropods of Agricultural, medical and veterinary importance can also be covered. A Field study to research organizations with respect to entomological aspects is also required.

Course objectives
By the end of the course the learners should be able to:

  • Discuss aspects of insect ecology
  • Explain the principle of pest control/ management (IPM)
  • Describe group pesticides, its formulation and application and explain how pest resistance develops
  • Describe how pathogens control insect pests and how insects develop resistance
  • Discuss arthropods of agricultural, medical and veterinary importance : how they spread diseases and control measures applied

Expected outcomes

  • Assess damage caused by different types of insects in crop  fields and grains in storage 
  • Apply insect control measures 
  • Design research projects in Applied Entomology
