CALL FOR APPLICANTS FOR THE MARITIME PROGRAMMES
In line with the Presidential Directive mandating Busitema University to take the lead in equipping Ugandans with critical skills in marine science and maritime education, the University is proud to announce the launch of three new academic programmes: Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, Diploma in Marine Engineering, and Diploma in Nautical Sciences. These programmes have been carefully designed to address national capacity gaps in the maritime and inland water transport sectors, while aligning with Uganda’s Blue Economy ambitions, Vision 2040, and global standards in maritime education and training. The new courses are anchored at Busitema University’s Maritime Institute and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, in collaboration with other key national and international stakeholders, and are structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on training in marine vessel operation, engineering systems, safety, navigation, and environmental stewardship.
These academic programmes target young Ugandans seeking to build careers in shipping, marine engineering, port and terminal operations, naval architecture, offshore energy, and maritime logistics. They will also offer upskilling opportunities for personnel already serving in Uganda’s marine, fisheries, petroleum, and water transport sub-sectors. Students will benefit from a multidisciplinary learning approach that includes simulation-based training, field attachments, and regulatory compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. The launch of these courses reaffirms Busitema University’s commitment to national development through relevant and responsive education, and marks a strategic milestone in building a competitive and skilled Ugandan maritime workforce.
The government has prioritized the transport of Ugandans and their property. Water transport has long been abandoned, and has started picking up in the last decade. Most of the manpower on these vessels is foreigners since no such training has been in the country. To boost capacity for water transport, the government decided to start up maritime education and training in the country at a subsidized cost so as to create more employment for the youth and improve the mobility of the citizens. Busitema University Maritime Institute is the first maritime school in the country and will help in capacity building, providing the graduates an opportunity to grab some of the most lucrative seafarer jobs in the world. Prepare for a challenging, lucrative, and rewarding career both at sea and ashore with Maritime Education and Training at Busitema University Maritime Institute.
