MPH8209 Scientific Writing and Effective Communication Skills

The overall objective of this course is to equip learners with the knowledge and skills in scientific writing and the fundamentals of effective scientific communication. Learners will review and critic a published article. Instruction will focus primarily on the process of writing and publishing scientific manuscripts and preparing PowerPoint presentations.

Course aim

This course aims at providing learners with practical, hands-on experience in writing manuscripts for scientific publication and PowerPoint presentations for presentation at national and international conferences.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

• Describe the importance of scientific writing in public health practice
• Summarize the steps used in conducting a literature review   
• Demonstrate ability to use a referencing software
• Distinguish the steps followed in writing a publishable scientific manuscript 
• Describe the steps involved in submitting a scientific manuscript for publication
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to a scientific audience
• Prepare a scientific presentation
